Do I Need to Replace My Heating System or Water Heater?

As heating systems and water heaters age, homeowners face the difficult decision and financial burden to either repair or replace them. If you find yourself at a crossroads, consider the following:

How old is your heater? Depending on the type, the average gently-used, well-maintained heating system will last from 15 to 25 years. The typical lifespan for a water heater is about 8 to 12 years.

How well has it been maintained?  Lack of maintenance causes a system to run inefficiently and consume more energy, accelerating repairs and total replacement. Annual maintenance is essential for your system’s longevity and for your comfort. Your system will operate at top efficiency and minor issues can be addressed before they become expensive repairs.

Your water heater should be inspected and flushed with vinegar regularly, especially in communities with hard water or poor water-quality where higher levels of sediment tend to build up.

Has the air filter been changed regularly? As a rule of thumb, check your filter every 1 to 3 months, depending on the efficiency rating and how often you run your system. Bottom line, if the filter looks sandy or tan in color, you should change it. Avoiding this step, can accelerate issues and increasingly affect your home comfort. How often does your system require repairs? Whether triggered by age or lack of maintenance, the more frequently a heating system and water heater require repairs, the closer they are to failing. When replacement parts, not covered by a warranty, are hard to find, expensive or unavailable, it may be time to replace your equipment.

Are you moving? Quite simply, a new system can greatly improve the value of your home.
